CELTIC. Eastern Europe. AR Tetradrachm (16.70 gms), Late 3rd-Early 2nd Centuries B.C. NGC Ch EF★, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 5/5. cf. Lanz-898-9; OTA type-579. Imitating Philip III. Obverse: Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin; Reverse: Zeus seated left on throne, holding eagle and scepter; two monograms in left field; below throne, monogram below strut. Incredibly impressive and appealing, this early imitative issue is clearly of a celticized nature, but nevertheless retains great artistry on the obverse that verges upon the authentic, official product. Wholly deserving of its star designation which, along with its robust pedigree, should allow this specimen to soar. From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection.<p>Ex: Hermitage Museum Collection (Schlessinger 13 - 2/1935) Lot # 748.
