MEXICO. "Royal" Presentation Cob 8 Reales, ND (ca. 1589-98)-Mo F. Mexico City Mint. Philip II. NGC EF Details--Sea Salvaged. Cal-664. Weight: 21.79. The only certified example of a "Royal" 8 Reales from 1589-98. Recovered from an unknown Spanish shipwreck, this example exhibits corrosion and salt-water damage across the surfaces. Perfectly centered and mostly round with a strong strike, though heavily corroded nearly all the design elements can still be made out. An interesting characteristic of this issue is that the punch used for the denomination "8" is the same punch used as stops in the legends. Despite its shortcomings a presentable example of this EXTREMELY RARE type that seldom appears on the market. From the Pat Johnson Collection.
