Fr. 341. 1880 $100 Silver Certificate. PMG Very Fine 30. An extremely scarce catalog number, with just 24 examples being reported in Track and Prices census, six of which are in government collections. At center is a large brown spiked treasury seal, whilst the right end displays intricate craftsmanship of the lathe work with a "100" counter below. At top right and bottom left are dark blue serial numbers. At left is a large portrait of the 5th President of the United States: James Monroe, who served from 1817 to 1825. Monroe served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, and interestingly after the war he studied law under Thomas Jefferson. Monroe is best remembered today for helping to negotiate the Louisiana Purchase, which nearly doubled the size of the newly founded United States. This type is surely missing from the most advanced large-size or Silver Certificate collections, and this is a bidding opportunity that might not come again for some time. PMG comments "Closed Pinholes."
