Fr. 41. 1862 $2 Legal Tender Note. PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ. Out of a whopping 567 notes graded for the Friedberg number, this note sits towards the top of PMGs Population Report. This example of the first federally issued $2 design type presents exceptional quality, essentially as nice as the day it was printed. The inks are sharp on this Deuce, with the dark forest green underprint and ruby red overprints standing out with fantastic appeal. This note hails from the, derogatory at the time of issuance, Greenback series launched in 1862. The engraving was done by NBNC, however ABNC and NBNC shared in the printing duties. Interestingly, Chittenden and Spinners signatures were printed with a separate plate in special ink.<p>At left of center is a large portrait of Alexander Hamilton, which was engraved by Joseph P. Ourdan. Similar to the Ace from the series, the 1-2-3 design is found below the treasury seal. The treasury seal was interestingly applied by the National Currency Bureau in Washington. The back is printed in green and has the denomination and redemption information. The last is the so-called Second Obligation: "This note is a Legal Tender for all debts public and private, except for duties on imports and interest on the public debt, and is receivable in payment of all loans made to the United States." A great opportunity for the type collector looking to upgrade or add this Gem to their elite level collection.
