1819 Series Numismatica Medal. First Issue. By Vivier. Musante GW-98, Baker-132, var. Bronze. Mint State, Reverse Scratches. 41 mm. Struck from an unlisted die combination, the obverse with the W in WASHINGTON as two Vs and different styling to the curls at the base of Washingtons portrait. On the reverse, the lettering and Roman numerals are smaller, similar in style to that seen on the reverse of Musante GW-101, but from a different die. Prooflike in the fields, especially on the obverse, both sides exhibit attractive rose-brown patina. A swirl of slightly deeper color is evident at the upper left reverse, although the most significant detraction is a series of fine pin scratches in that area, the lengthiest of which curves along the inside of the rim from 8 oclock to 1 oclock. Intriguing due to the unlisted die pairing, and sure to catch the eye of specialists.
