1801 (1861-1886) Thomas Jefferson Indian Peace Medal. Second Size. By Robert Scot. Julian IP-3. Bronze. First Reverse. MS-63 BN (NGC). 75 mm. Vivid mahogany-brown surfaces reveal intermingled olive highlights when viewed at indirect lighting angles. A few swirls of variegated color in the left obverse and lower reverse field areas are noted, the latter side also with a trace of faint carbon around the periphery. Both sides are free of detracting marks, however, the in hand appearance smooth and the eye appeal strong. Close inspection reveals considerable light spalling or die rust on both sides, and the sharp, yet thin die crack from 1 oclock on the reverse border into the clasped hands cannot be missed. According to Robert Julian, the original dies for this medal were replaced in 1886, so this piece dates earlier, though precisely how much earlier is unclear.
