Bushrod Washington Check and American Colonization Society Letter. Included in this lot are a check signed by Bushrod Washington, whom was a nephew of George Washington. The check is ordered to the Bank of Columbia for $1,125 and is dated January 3, 1820. Also included is a letter written by Theodore Frelinghuysen dated July 25, 1826 inviting Reverend Bacon to a meeting of a seemingly off-shoot organization of the American Colonization Society. A copy of the letter typed out is included. The American Colonization Society was a benevolent attempt by leading abolitionists, clerics and politicians to relocate free African Americans to Liberia.
