ITALY. Bruttium. Lokroi Epizephyrioi. Fourree Stater (6.85 gms), ca. 375-330 B.C. NGC Ch VF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 2/5. Graffito. cf. HGC-1, 1565 (for prototype); cf. HN Italy-2319 (same); cf. SNG ANS-522 (same). Contemporary imitation. Obverse: Laureate head of Zeus left; Reverse: Eagle flying left, clutching dead hare in talons. A few light spots expose the base metal core on this ancient counterfeit, though the toning is quite deep and seemingly presents as the real issue. Given the scattered wear upon the high points, more than a few people in antiquity were fooled by its spurious nature. From the Collection of a Gentleman.<p>Ex: Coin Galleries (8/1984) Lot # 79.
