Fr. 343. 1891 $100 Silver Certificate. PCGS Banknote Very Fine 30. The 1891 $100 series retained the portrait of former President James Monroe but the back has an open style design with large spaces to the left and right of center eliminating the word "SILVER" as found on 1880 and prior. The Treasury Department believed that this would deter counterfeiting. The present note retains quite admirable detail throughout for the assigned grade with nice overprints and wide margins noticed. Approximately 120,000 pieces were printed and today 21 examples are recorded in the Martin Gengerke census. Five of those are held in government or institutional collections. These notes were redeemable for silver dollars and it would appear that redemption rates were greater than for lesser denominations.
