Fr. 151. 1869 $50 Legal Tender Note. PMG Fine 12. An often difficult to locate $50 from the popular Rainbow series, with just 70 examples reported in Track and Prices census. This example is being offered in a Fine state of preservation, and albeit well handled retains good appeal of the primary design with just faint blue underprint noticed. While this note is found in a Fine 12 grade, it faces up quite well offering good color and detail of the design. This note last traded hands publicly 21 years ago for $8,800. Allegorical figure of Peace is found standing at left with Mercury in hand along with laurel leaves. A portrait vignette of Henry Clay is found at right, whom served as the 9th Secretary of State from 1825 to 1829. Clay was called the "Great Compromiser" during his tenure in politics for helping to defuse sectional crisis among political parties at the time. PMG comments "Restoration."
