Fr. 61b. 1862 $5 Legal Tender Note. PCGS Currency Very Choice New 64 PPQ. Series 66 at upper left. No. 12606, Plate B7. Type II seal. Track and Price reports just 24 examples in their census for this incredibly scarce Friedberg variety. The "a" and "c" varieties pale in comparison when held up against the census numbers for the "b" variety, with nearly 30 times as many "a" varieties reported and 6 times as many "c" varieties reported. This nearly Gem offering boasts fully original paper, having earned PCGS Currencys PPQ designation. Dark olive green undertint at center on the obverse is accentuated by bright paper. The design remains particularly bold on the face with the Statue of Freedom depicted at left and a portrait of Alexander Hamilton at right. A geometric-heavy design is found on the reverse which displays intricate lathe work showcased in dark forest green ink. The "Legal Tender" clause is found at center, with two "FIVE" counters found at left and right. This Civil War era Five is scarce in this grade level, especially so for the variety. Worthy of a premium bid. From the Silver Springs Collection.
