PORTUGAL. Portugal - Spain. 870 Reis, ND (1834). Maria II. NGC VF-35. cf. KM-440.37; Gomes-M2.30.03. Issued by decree of 1 September 1834. Crowned arms of Portugal applied to the obverse of an 1823-M SR 20 Reales of Ferdinand VII. The countermark is deeply impressed with good definition of the fine details on a seldom encountered moderately worn host adding to its desirability sure to excite many collectors of the countermark series. The surfaces display light attractive gray tone with areas of richer coloration amongst the devices offering a pleasing appearance.
In 1834 the Government ordered all Spanish and Spanish colonial 8 Reales then in circulation to be countermarked with the crowned arm of Portugal raising the value to 870 Reis and revalidating them to circulate freely.
