1896 Liberty Head Double Eagle. MS-64 (PCGS). Vivid honey-rose surfaces are fully struck with intense mint luster. The circulation strike 1896 has a recorded mintage of 792,535 pieces, down more than one million coins from the previous years production figure at Philadelphia. As is typical, much of the mintage was shipped overseas in business and other transactions. Mint State coins have been coming back to Americas shores for decades, and our current estimate for such examples is in the range of 10,000 to 16,000 or more coins. With a generous population, the 1896 is particularly popular for Mint State type purposes, although we auction bidders that the paucity of certified Gems in MS-65 and higher grades has resulted in strong collector demand for attractive MS-64s, as here.
