1857-D Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter 34-CC. Medium D. MS-61 (NGC). Offered is an exceptionally well preserved example of an elusive pre-Civil War Southern gold issue. Vivid orange-apricot surfaces are highly lustrous with considerable semi-reflectivity in the fields. Otherwise satiny in texture, the strike is impressively sharp for the issuing mint with only a touch of softness confined to the central high points. From a mintage of 17,046 pieces, survivors of which are among the scarcest late date Dahlonega Mint fives. At the Mint State level of preservation the present example is rare from a condition standpoint, and would be a great choice for inclusion in an advanced cabinet.
