The Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, a uniface obverse and reverse printers model for $5, type of 1911-1922, serial number 0000001, blue, black and yellow-orange, vignette of a sampan and junk boat boat at sea, pagoda by the shoreline, denomination at each corner, bank arms at centre left and $5 at centre right, the reverse red and black, bank building at centre, allegorical symbols depicting Great Britain, China, India and Australia, similar but obviously different to the issued design, a beautiful work of art by Waterlow and Sons,(Pick 41 for type), both sides in a PMG slab without a grade. A historically important pair as it can only be the earliest fully drawn printers design for the Scenic series of 1909/1911/1912 for HSBC, Chartered Bank and The Mercantile Bank.
Whilst it is logical to assume multiple printers models were made for each denomination at each Bank, this is the only one of two known from this period to date.
The other one is a uniface obverse design for the Spider Web $500 of 1912 which was sold by Spink China in March 2019 for HKD$660,000 inclusive of the Buyers Premium and this is a complete pair with the obverse and reverse. A crowning piece in the best of any banknote collection. Unique!
