JAPAN. Silver 10 Yen Pattern, ND. Bureau Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-62 Gold Shield. <p>JAPAN. Silver 10 Yen Pattern, ND. Bureau Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-62 Gold Shield.KM-Unlisted; JNDA-Unlisted; Bank of Japan-Unlisted; ANS-Unlisted; BM-Unlisted; Hartill-Unlisted; JV-Unlisted. 20.5 mm. A fascinating issue without denomination struck on a silver planchet. The obverse exhibits three characters "Zō hei kyoku" indicating "Monetary Bureau", with three Paulownia flowers in identical formation to the obverse on the reverse indicating coin alignment. It is interesting to note that we were able to locate a six different examples, all from Japanese auctions struck in brass or copper, from this series all containing a central letter "A", "K" or "S", but none that were missing the central letter altogether such as the present example. It also appears that the present piece exhibits a mint made file mark on the reverse, perhaps as a weight adjustment that none of the others display which were struck in lesser metals. This highly interesting issue is perfect for the academic collector wishing to scour Japanese mint records in search of answers for this enigmatic issuance.
