Lovett Engraver Family-Related Pay Draft of the Treasurer of the City of New-York. May 13, 1811. Printed on laid paper with watermark. Extremely Fine.Hammer canceled four times. The draft is payable to Thomas & George Lovett for "paving Fourth Street." Signed by architect of the Erie Canal DeWitt Clinton as mayor, co-founder of the New York Stock Exchange G.N. Bleecker as Comptroller and Jacob Morton as Clerk. Endorsed on back by Thomas & George Lovett. Thomas and George Lovett were brothers of famed and prolific engraver Robert Lovett, Sr. Thomas, like his brother, was a trained engraver who passed away in his late 30s in 1824. According to David Baldwins website on the Lovett family, George "…began his career as a building contractor. An earthmoving commission he received to fill in the Battery earned him so much cash that he was able to invest heavily in real estate and become one of Manhattans largest landowners. In the 1850s he became a mortgage banker, and was ranked as one of New Yorks wealthiest citizens." A rare tie in with the Lovett family for the token collector who otherwise has it all!
