Fr. 356. 1891 $2 Treasury Note. PMG Choice Uncirculated 63. Serial Number 7.The reverent portrait of Union Major General James Birdseye McPherson is prominently displayed at left on this face of this serial number 7 Series of 1891 $2 Treasury Note. McPherson was killed in the July 1864 Battle of Atlanta, served as chief engineer under General U.S. Grant in 1862, and later served in the Vicksburg Campaign (1862-1863) and the Battle of Shiloh (1864), after which he was given command of the Army of the Tennessee. His opponent at the Battle of Atlanta was his West Point classmate and friend John Bell Hood who wrote of this great sorrow upon learning of the death of his friend. The vividly inked face impression boldly displays low serial number B7 in brilliant red inks in panels to the lower left and upper right of center. A cherry red scalloped Treasury Seal is found to the lower right of center as well. Series of 1891 $2 Treasury Notes feature a redesigned "Open Face" back instead of the busy "Ornate Back" notes from the Series of 1890. This Rosecrans-Nebeker signed example is vividly inked and boldly embossed. PMG has even added a "Good Embossing" comment on the back of the holder. A remarkable single digit serial number note with broad collector appeal.
