1873 Shield Nickel. Close 3. FS-102. Doubled Die Obverse. MS-64 (PCGS). CAC.Lustrous satin surfaces are minimally toned in pale silvery tinting. The strike is razor sharp throughout, close inspection with a loupe revealing particularly pronounced doubling within the shield on the obverse. Writing in the 2015 edition of the Cherrypickers Guide to Rare Die Varieties of United States Coins</em>, Bill Fivaz and J.T. Stanton state that the 1873 FS-102 is, "one of the stronger doubled dies in the Shield nickel series and is on the want-list of virtually every collector." As one of the two finest examples known to PCGS, the significance of our offering of this lovely Choice example can hardly be overstated.PCGS# 38396.
