NGUYEN DYNASTY (DAI NAM): Minh Mang, 1820-1841, AE large cash (23.41g), Barker-154, Sch-143, 50mm, thien bat ai dao, dia bat ai bao ("The heaven is not miserly with righteousness, and neither is the earth with treasures"), pierced at top & bottom for suspending cord & tassels, VF, ex John Sylvester Jr. Collection. Beginning in 1837, a new series of large cash coins valued at 60 van were issued during the reigns of Minh Mang, Thieu Tri, and Tu Duc. The reverses have four- or eight-character poetic legends, most of which are derived from Confucianist and classical Chinese literature. They were initially intended as presentation pieces or royal rewards, but many found their way into circulation.
