PTOLEMAIC EGYPT. Ptolemy I Soter, 323-283 B.C. AR Tetradrachm (14.66 gms), Uncertain mint 3, probably Memphis, ca. 306-303 B.C. NGC EF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 1/5. Scratches, Graffiti, Edge Chips. Svor-139; CPE-89; SNG Cop-23. In the name of Alexander III (the Great) of Macedon. Obverse: Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, wearing elephant skin and aegis around neck; Reverse: Athena advancing right, holding shield and hurling spear; monogram to inner left; to right, monogram and eagle standing right on thunderbolt. Though pleasingly struck and toned, this example does exhibit quite a bit of roughness in many forms, while the chipping at the edges has caused NGC to photo certify this rather than encapsulating.
