CHILE. 2 Escudos, 1833/25-So I. Santiago Mint. PCGS VF-20 Gold Shield. Fr-35; KM-86. Mintage: 224. An EXTREMELY RARE date for this early Republican type, which boasts the second lowest mintage for the type, the lowest being the 1827 date that saw only 204 pieces minted. Of these, its obvious that few have survived, as a search of archived records only turns up one other example, that appearing in a German auction in 2016. Marginally finer, this example reflects moderate circulation which has softened the high points of the design, but no significant marks, or planchet issues (as often occur within this series) are observed. Very light tone that sits around the designs adds further compliment to this altogether charming survivor.Issued alongside the iconic silver Volcano types, this gold series (running from the Escudo through 8 Escudos), displays much of the same Latin American iconography of the period, with two volcanoes and an anthropomorphic sun as part of its obverse design. The other side, with a notable design as well, shows the crossed flags of the new nation in addition a pillar with radiant star above.</em> From the Matthew Orsini Collection.
