MEXICO. 8 Escudos, 1762-Mo MM. Mexico City Mint. Charles III. NGC AU-55. KM-155, Onza-744 ("muy rara"). Wonderful quality for this elusive and highly coveted type, this piece displays significant luster and just a hint of orange-reddish coloration around the outer legends. Like those legends, the centers are impressively bold as well, with rarely exceeded detail appearing in the all-important depiction of Charles IIIs bust. On the reverse, the crowned shield is equally sharp, whereas most lack the full detail seen here. Largely due to its choice strike, a coin that is worthy of strong bidder competition, as its easily superior to the specimen of this date from the Rudman Collection (NGC-graded AU-53+) that brought $9,987.50 when it sold in 2015. From the Oro del Nuevo Mundo Collection.
