CHILE. 8 Escudos, 1851-So LA. Santiago Mint. NGC MS-61. KM-105; Onza-1694. Variety with incuse "FEBRERO" on edge. Only slightly modified from the previous type with more elaborate design within the pedestal and constitution and a Standing Liberty motif that now portrays her with a Phrygian cap, rather than a warriors plumed cap. This example is immediately noteworthy for its exceptional brilliance, with a strike that comes into focus shortly thereafter, as it perfectly details the aforenoted Standing Liberty and pedestal motif as well as the corresponding supported coat-of-arms on the other side. Free from the frequently appearing planchet issues as well, with the only distraction, albeit a minute one, being a few small contact marks in the field above the pedestal. As it is, unsurpassed grade for the date at NGC or PCGS with only three examples of the type (all of the 1850 date) appearing the MS-62 grade. From the Oro del Nuevo Mundo Collection.Ex: R.L. Lissner Collection (CNG 8/2014) Lot # 1361.
