1840-O Liberty Seated Quarter. Drapery. Briggs 1-A, FS-501. Rarity-6. Large O. VF Details--Cleaning (PCGS). This is an elusive variety in all grades, and was considered the rarest of the collectible Liberty Seated quarters back when Larry Briggs wrote his Comprehensive Encyclopedia on this series in 1991. Back then no Mint State examples were known, although at least two have turned up in the generation since publication of the reference. This variety combines Briggs Obverse 1 of the 1840-O Drapery issue with the authors Reverse B of the No Drapery issue, albeit with a second set of denticles hand cut into the latter die. While not a perfect example, the present offering is an important one for the advanced specialist in this challenging and underappreciated series. From the Collection of Steve Studer.
