1796 Draped Bust Quarter. B-2. Rarity-3. VG Details--Repaired (PCGS). Richly toned in a blend of steel and deep pewter gray, both sides retain bold outline detail to virtually all design elements. Border denticulation is particularly pronounced on the obverse, that on the reverse soft only in isolated areas. Several wispy pin scratches are noted, the surfaces with a subdued matte-like texture that helps to explain the PCGS qualifier. Always in demand, the historic 1796 is the first United States Mint quarter and the only one of the Draped Bust, Small Eagle design type. Survivors from a mintage of 6,146 coins are scarce and eagerly sought at all levels of preservation. This more affordable VG example allows ready attribution of the Browning-2 "High 6" variety.
