1865 Andrew Johnson Indian Peace Medal. Large Size. By Anthony C. Paquet. Julian IP-40, Musante GW-770, Baker-173X, var (unlisted in bronze). Bronze. MS-62 BN (NGC). 76 mm. Dominant autumn-brown patina with intermingled light olive highlights, the obverse contrasts somewhat with a reverse that is more uniformly medium olive-brown in appearance. The latter side is smooth in hand, although the former exhibits a few prominent marks over and before Johnsons portrait that explain the MS-62 numeric grade from NGC. This is the size of the Andrew Johnson Indian Peace medal that the Mint sold to most contemporary collectors, although the small size (62 mm) pieces were also offered on occasion. Bronze impressions are mentioned by Baker in his introduction to the Peace medal series, but not given a number of their own.
