CHINA. Silver "Mausoleum" Dollar Pattern, Year 16 (1927). PCGS SPECIMEN-63 Gold Shield.L&M-85; K-609; Wenchao-pg. 555#898 (rarity three stars); Sun-III-4-01; WS-0130. Mintage: 480. Tied with 4 other specimens at this grade level on the PCGS population report, only surpassed by 4 pieces (PCGS SP-63+ (1) and SP-64 (3), previously designated "MS"). VERY RARE and heavily sought after. A sharply struck and very attractive example of this always in demand and popular pattern Dollar exhibiting flashy surfaces with much brilliance combined with frosty devices. The obverse displays light subtle iridescent tone that catches the eye when tilted in the light while the reverse exhibits a lovely iridescent sheen with dusky hues all adding to its pleasing appearance. A highly desirable, low mintage and tough to locate pattern sure to add depth to the next collection it enters destined for an advanced collection of Chinese rarities. Designed by Richard Placht, Austrian medalist and engraver for the Vienna mint. Although attractive and elegant in its design, the pattern was destined to be met with disapproval. While stylistically correct, the "Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum" is lacking several design elements. (Construction of the site was still under way as this pattern was being designed). Since the engraver never actually saw the site and was only supplied with drawings, elements were omitted including the mausoleum steps leading to its face. It is also noted that the engraving of Dr. Sun Yat-sen was met with disapproval from authorities in China, as it bore only partial resemblance to his actual likeness.
