The Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, 5 Hong Ping Taels, trial/pattern note, Tientsin, c.1900, green on pink-purple, Bank arms at upper centre Ts 5 on each sides, FIFTY in light blue which is HIGHLY UNUSUAL, reverse green, Bank title and denomination in English,(Pick not listed), PMG 62 Uncirculated (Tear Repairs). The mismatch between the underprint FIFTY and 5 Taels in the uppermost printing mean this note could be interpreted as an inital trial or pattern to see the effects of different colour combinations. This combination was largely accepted as can been seen in the specimen offered in the next lot but without the subtle sun ray effect and yellow green was used in the protector rather than light blue. Excessively rare if not unique!
