Undated (ca. 1694) London Elephant Token. Hodder 2-B, W-12040. Rarity-2. GOD PRESERVE LONDON, Thin Planchet. Good Details--Graffiti (PCGS).Handsome autumn-brown patina blankets both sides of this overall smooth example. The elephant is well outlined on the obverse, the reverse missing the word GOD and parts of the shield, but with other features on that side discernible to bold. The PCGS qualifier concerns initials added along the upper obverse border and over the lower right of the shield on the reverse, a bisecting scratch through the left half of the reverse also noted for accuracy. Most Elephant tokens of this variety are struck on thick planchet, although Q. David Bowers (<em>Whitman Encyclopedia of Colonial and Early American Coins</em>, 2009) states, "A few are on thin, wide planchets," and these pieces command a significant premium among specialists.PCGS# 58.
