1930 National Air Races Medal by Oskar J.W. Hansen. Silvered Bronze. MS-63. (NGC).63.0 mm. Struck by Medallic Art Company, and inscribed on the edge to Carl S. Junge. Lovely antiqued silver surfaces, a typical Art Deco period finish. Mostly matte silver with some irregular areas of darker patina. A handsome medal of classic design. The obverse bears the signature of Oskar J.W. Hansen, who also created the magnificent monumental Art Deco bronze sculptures found at Hoover Dam. It is unclear as to why this medal was presented to Carl S. Junge, however, Junge was an illustrator and poster designer active in Chicago in the 1920s and 1930s. As noted on the medal, the Tenth Anniversary National Air Races were held in Chicago, between August 23 and September 1, 1930. There was poster produced for the event, and we suspect that perhaps Junge was its designer, though we have not been able to verify this. Junge seems to have primarily been a designer of beautiful Art Deco bookplates. This said, in D. Wayne Johnsons book, Whos Who Among American Medalists, Carl Stephen Junge is listed, though no works are given. A faint signature on the reverse of this medal seems to include "AR" which could be from Oskar, or from Carl, so it is possible that Junge designed the reverse. We have not seen a piece with a strong signature to make a determination.
