1868 Ulysses S. Grant Medal. Musante JAB-32, DeWitt-USG 1868-33. Copper. Plain Edge. MS-63 BN (NGC).25 mm. The obverse exhibits iridescent golden-copper patina with plenty of original faded pink color shining forth at direct lighting angles. The reverse is more boldly toned with iridescent cobalt blue and pale gold highlights to dominant antique copper. Both sides are semi-reflective in the fields with sharply rendered features. A few faint spots on the obverse are easily overlooked at most viewing angles. Musante (<em>The Medallic Works of John Adams Bolen</em>, 2002) reports that just 14 examples of this type were struck in copper by Bolen, with an unknown number potentially struck by John W. Kline in the 1870s.
