Fr. 85. 1907 $5 Legal Tender Note. PCGS Currency Superb Gem New 67 PPQ.Exceptionally printed inks accentuate the design of this ever-popular Legal Tender design type. The Pioneer Family vignette, engraved by Henry Gugler, is found at center. This type is commonly known by the "Woodchopper" nickname for the scene of a pioneer man holding an ax standing by a fallen tree with his family. "Old Hickory" Andrew Jackson is seen at left as engraved by Alfred Sealey. This Napier-McClung signed $5 is ideally centered with broad margins and pristine paper. Original plate and overprint embossing is clearly evident from the verso. Last year we sold a PCGS Superb Gem New 68 PPQ example for $11,700. Even the most common Woodchoppers, Fr. 91, sell for over $2,000 at this grade level.
