CC-1. Continental Currency. May 10, 1775. $1. PMG About Uncirculated 53.No.20613. Signed by Wm. Jackson and Andrew Bunner. The first Continental currency note and first United States government $1 bill. A handsome example and one of the finest extant. We know of no example that is fully Uncirculated and a quick glance at both grading services Population Reports confirms that fact. The highest graded notes are AU 58. A boldly printed example with a light centerfold and some corner rubbing. The emblem on the face shows a weighted bowl on an acanthus plant. The motto is DEPRESSARESURGIT, which Newman translates "though crushed it recovers." We have checked auction results for the past couple of decades and all of the AU examples of this $1 note have each sold somewhere in the $2,000-$5,000 value range. This very note has sold at auction a couple of times with an average realized price around $2,500. Very undervalued compared to many American currency types and a key to any complete high-grade set of Continental Currency. A note that deserves to set a new level of achievement for this type.
