ITALY. Calabria. Tarentum. AR Didrachm (Nomos) (6.43 gms), ca. 240-228 B.C. NGC MS, Strike: 2/5 Surface: 3/5. Vlasto-950; HN Italy-1057. Obverse: Youth riding and crowning horse right; monogram to left and right; below, ΦΙΛΟ / ΚΛΗΣ in two lines above dolphin right; Reverse: Phalanthos, holding rhyton and trident, on dolphin left; two amphoras to right. In the opinion of this cataloger, the present specimen--presenting no evidence of any wear--has been graded quite harshly regarding both its strike and surface designations. While there is some minor off centering and weakness, it is still an attractive overall strike, and the surfaces present more allure than one would assume from its designation.
