PONTOS. Kingdom of Pontos. Mithradates VI, 120-63 B.C. AV Stater (8.25 gms), Tomis Mint, ca. 88-86 B.C. NGC Ch EF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 5/5. Callatay p. 142; HGC-3.2, 1931. Struck in the names and types of Lysimachos of Thrace. Obverse: Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon; Reverse: BAΣΙΛΕΩΣ / ΛΥΣIMAXOY, Athena seated left on throne, holding Nike and spear; ΘE to inner left, TO on throne; in exergue, ornate trident left. Always encountered in a rather spread and disheveled style, these imitative issues often dont posses solid strikes. This example, however, is well centered and quite sharp, with a good deal of brilliance remaining.
