1883 George Washington (Evacuation Day) Medal. Bronze. 57.5 mm. By Charles Osborne, Engraved by Lea Ahlborn. Miller-6, Musante GW-719, Baker S-319. Mint State. Rich reddish-brown patina is displayed both sides. There are minor edge bruises at 2 oclock on the obverse and 2 oclock on the reverse. Designed in America by Charles Osborne, but struck at the Royal Mint in Stockholm, Sweden. Although plans for a medal for the Centennial of Evacuation Day were set into motion well before the event, the backdated medals were not produced until late the following year and into the next. In all, 381 bronze specimens were produced. They feature an unusual concave obverse depicting the George Washington statue on the steps of the Sub-Treasury Building on Wall Street. The reverse has a more traditional rendering of the seals of the City of New York, the New York City Chamber of Commerce, and the American Numismatic Society. A type that is popular with both Washingtoniana enthusiasts and specialists in ANS medals. From the Richard Jewell Collection.
