ANTONINUS PIUS, A.D. 138-161. AV Aureus (7.22 gms), Rome Mint, A.D. 155-156. NGC AU, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 5/5. RIC-255a; Calico-1670. Obverse: ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P IMP II, laureate head right; Reverse: TR POT XIX CO S IIII, Victory advancing left, holding wreath and palm frond. An excellent and only lightly handled example of this gold issue from the later part of the reign of Pius. The strike is incredibly sharp while a tremendous array of mint luster still remains radiating throughout.
