Bank of China, $5, Shanghai, 1913 overprinted on Ta Ching Government Bank issue of 1909, serial number 2773100, brown, blue and black, Li Hong Zhang at left, gazebo at right, WU (Five) at each corner, the original bank title overprinted by circular cancellations, Bank of China Exchange Note and Second Year of the Republic of China overprinted at upper and lower centre, reverse blue and black, the Summar Palace at centre,(Pick17i), PCGS Gold Shield 15 Details (Minor Repair). Any notes from this series is rare let alone a $5 denomination. Most overprinted notes have the First Year of the Republic of China as opposed to Second Year overprinted at lower centre. This date and Shanghai place name is believed to be unique. Another striking feature of this note is that the original bank title is overprinted by black circles rather than black lines. See previous lot for the illustrations on this. A classical note, unique and simply magnificent
