The seat for the Eastern Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople for over 1,000 years until the fall of the Byzantine Empire in 1453, the Hagia Sophia was then re-purposed as an iconic mosque following the Ottoman conquest. Today, it stands as an edifice venerated by multiple religions owing to its rich historical significance.</em> From the Richard Jewell Collection.
