This type was produced in a quantity of 1,938 pieces in 2002 with the design taken from the original plasters submitted by artist and engraver Frans Karel Hejda for the 1938 competition for a new U.S. nickel design. The original plasters were auctioned by Stacks in 1994, then obtained by Coincraft of London and reduced to the standard nickel size. Not a government issue, and produced more than 60 years after the competition for the new design ended, solely for sale to collectors.
