Marietta, Ohio. $10 1902 Plain Back. Fr. 624. The First NB. Charter #142. PCGS Currency Very Choice New 64 PPQ. The First National Bank of Marietta was early in the game, gaining Charter 142 as noted. It was authorized on November 14, 1863, with a capital of $50,000. The founding president was Beman Gates, and William F. Curtis was the first cashier. By 1867 the capital was raised to $100,000, with a limit of $200,000 if desired. By 1874 the figure was $150,000. The bank was a staple in the commerce of this Ohio River town until it fell victim to the Depression and on March 27, 1933, was placed into conservatorship, after not passing the test made during the Bank Holiday. Matters did not get better, and it went into receivership on February 5, 1934, at which time the capital was $500,000. Dark printed signatures and deeply embossed devices give this near gem Plain Back lots of visual appeal.
