Burlington, New Jersey. Burlington Bank. September 1, 1855. $1. Very Fine. (NJ-50 G2 SENC, Wait 220) Fully issued note engraved and printed by Draper, Welsh & Co. Philadelphia. A very rare New Jersey note and the only issued example confirmed by us. There were two proofs of the design on the solitary sheet in the 1990 ABN sale. Named steamboat "John Stevens" (Stevens was the pioneer New Jersey steamboat innovator) at center with town in background. Male portrait at top left. "Child with Rabbits," adapted from Solomon Nunes Carvalhos art in oval at bottom right. All genuine notes from the bank are rarities. This note is well framed with excellent paper body. A few minor foxing patches are seen, but a nice overall appearance remains. There are relatively few issued New Jersey rarities to be had in auctions of the past few year. Most of these appear to remain closely held. Ex our March 2015 Baltimore sale where it realized $881.25. Worth that or more today.
