Terre Haute, Indiana. Southern Bank of Indiana. ND (18xx). $1. About Uncirculated. Proof. (IN-650 G2; WVS 2350-01). India paper Proof by Wellstood, Hanks, Hay & Whiting. An extremely rare and well pedigreed proof. Only one type of note, the $10 with red back, from this bank is encountered readily. This is one of two confirmed by us; the other is the Haxby Plate Note. There is much to recommend on this gorgeous type. Of special interest is the rarely encountered "Death of King Phillip" vignette which was originally crafted for the Aquidneck Bank of Rhode Island. However, it appears this bank selected its use on this denomination for its four-subject face plate featuring $1-$2-$5-$10 notes. Issued notes supposedly had blue backs. The King Phillip scene is striking as it portrays a rival Native American approaching as he holds a knife in hand on the ground in defense for his life. Washington left and State Seal at the right. A bold example, but accurately with a professionally conserved ("Barrows of Richmond") tear at bottom center and upper left and right corners. Originally in our Stacks John J. Ford Jr. Part 8, January 2005 Sale: Lot 1133 at $1,150 and then our March 2015 Peter Mayer Collection Part III sale where it realized $940.00. Indiana proof rarities were strongly pursued in the recent Florida sale and this might be the only example available of this gorgeous type. Presents a choice appearance and its rarity unquestioned.
