Norwalk, Connecticut. Bank of Norwalk. Sept. 5, 1857. $3. Very Fine. Archival Specimen. (CT-340 G6c? Unlisted; Whitman CT-850-003-G? Unlisted). A second extremely rare Archival Specimen on banknote bond paper from this desirable shoreline bank. The first we have seen of this imprint variant with "ABC" monogram and engraved date. Cancelled lightly with eight punch holes across the signature blocks as a proof. Quite stylish design with intense vignette at the upper left of a ship rescue scene with sailors leaning on their broken mast on beach, spying through telescope. Sheep lower right and male portrait. Red protector outlines THREE. This denomination, sheet-mate once to the prior, whose top margin aligns perfectly with the prior $2 archival example, was used by engravers to design a potential final protector type. Penciled in lightly is a large "3" in left center making this a unique art piece. More handling than last but seen from the back mostly. The note is framed all around. An important Connecticut Obsolete note and interesting with its engravers addition. A second important rarity that have travelled as a pair prior to their offering here.
