SC-97.2. South Carolina. April-May, 1775. 50 Pound. PMG Very Fine 25. Promissory Note. No. 1270. A promissory note issued by South Carolina to raise funds for the Revolutionary War. This note is signed by Henry Middleton, who at the time this note was issued was president of the provincial congress of South Carolina. Middleton served as the 2nd President of the Continental Congress from October 22, 1774 to October 26, 1774. Middleton was opposed to declaring independence from England, and left the Continental Congress to return to South Carolina, where he was captured when the British besieged Charleston. Heavy ink cancellations are found on this piece, which is seen with an ornate crown design on the reverse. Bold ink details, such as the penned signatures and penned date of April 29 are found on this large size colonial. PMG comments "Cancelled, Ink Burn."
