1854-S Liberty Head Eagle. AU-55 (PCGS). This sharply defined, near-fully lustrous example retains ample evidence of a frosty to semi-prooflike finish from the dies. Pretty golden-rose patina throughout, both sides are vivid and visually appealing. The 1854-S is the premier ten-dollar gold eagle issue from the San Francisco Mint. While a relatively high percentage of the 123,826-piece mintage has survived, examples that grade AU or Mint State are scarce relative to demand for them among todays quality conscious gold enthusiasts.
