1848-O Liberty Head Eagle. AU-53 (PCGS). Lustrous yellow-gold surfaces are accented by deeper honey hues at the lower obverse. Halos of satiny luster glow from within the protected areas, completing the overall flashy and somewhat prooflike complexion. Wispy abrasions are commensurate with the grade, and none are significant enough to warrant individual attention.Of the 35,850 examples of the date produced, most went into circulation where they served, long, hard duty -- todays survivors are more apt to be VF to EF than any other grade. At Choice AU, as here, the scarcity of the date is renowned. Indeed, just eight examples of the date have been certified as Mint State by NGC, with all but three of those Uncirculated grading events clustered at the MS-60 and MS-61 level. At the AU-53 level offered here we feel a serious collector cant go wrong.
