1844-O Liberty Head Eagle. AU-55 (PCGS). This vibrant yellow-gold example boasts satiny luster around the design elements and notions of honey shades in areas. Scattered light marks show in the fields but the complexion remains well composed and smooth. Well struck and remarkably attractive. The 1844-O trails only the 1847-O and 1843-O as the third most plentiful New Orleans Mint eagle from the 1840s. Even so, survivors from a mintage of 118,700 pieces are scarce in an absolute sense, and they are seldom offered at or above the present grade level. With Uncirculated examples particularly elusive, this premium Choice AU is a strong candidate for inclusion in an advanced gold cabinet or mintmarked type set.
