1822 Capped Bust Dime. JR-1, the only known dies. Rarity-3+. VF Details--Repaired (PCGS). Eagerly sought as the rarest date in the Capped Bust dime series, the 1822 is in strong demand at all levels of preservation. The present example retains bold outline detail to the design elements, the borders universally denticulated with plenty of sharper definition remaining to Libertys hair and the eagles plumage. Extensively smoothed, explaining the PCGS qualifier. Both sides have since been retoned in warm reddish-mauve patina. The actual mintage of this key date is likely on the order of just 25,000 coins, despite the fact the federal records report that 100,000 dimes were struck during calendar year 1822. Only 200 to 250 examples are believed extant. From the E. Horatio Morgan Collection.
